ChatGPT developer OpenAI has witnessed a surge in user adoption, surpassing 400 million weekly active users in February, according to a company spokesperson.
This milestone marks a significant jump from 300 million weekly users in December, underscoring the growing reliance on artificial intelligence tools.
The Microsoft-backed startup has also seen rapid expansion in its enterprise segment, with over 2 million paying business users in February.
This figure more than doubled since its last update in September, demonstrating increased interest in AI-powered solutions across various industries.
The robust growth figures arrive amidst rising competition in the AI landscape. Earlier this year, China's DeepSeek introduced an AI model it claimed could rival or even surpass Western counterparts at a significantly lower cost.
The announcement stirred discussions about the U.S.'s dominance in the generative AI sector.
However, DeepSeek has struggled to maintain its momentum, with soaring demand leading to system outages for the emerging company.

Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding DeepSeek’s procurement of Nvidia’s H800 chips, which are essential for training AI models.
The chips have been under U.S. export restrictions, raising questions about how the company secured access to them despite Washington’s trade limitations.
Beyond user growth, OpenAI has also reported notable advancements in its AI model adoption.
Developer traffic for its reasoning models has doubled over the past six months, while its o3 model, launched in late January, has experienced a fivefold increase in usage.
These figures reaffirm OpenAI’s dominant position in the AI ecosystem, as demand for sophisticated AI tools continues to escalate.
