Tesla Recalls Over 9,000 Model X SUVs Due to Roof Trim Issue

The issue involves the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces, which may have been adhered to without primer, potentially causing them to detach from the vehicle.

  • Tesla is recalling 9,136 Model X SUVs from the 2016 model year due to a roof trim issue that could detach and create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Tesla has been monitoring reports since 2022 and is aware of approximately 170 claims related to the issue, but no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Tesla is recalling 9,136 Model X sports utility vehicles from the 2016 model year due to a potential safety concern with the roof trim, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced.

The issue involves the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces, which may have been adhered to without primer, potentially causing them to detach from the vehicle. This defect could create a road hazard and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall marks a rare instance where Tesla, known for addressing most vehicle issues via over-the-air software updates, is conducting a physical recall. According to the NHTSA, this is the second recall for the same issue, with the first occurring in 2020.

The automaker stated that a process change was made at the supplier in July 2016 to prevent the issue in later models. However, since 2022, Tesla has been monitoring reports and conducting aging tests, including those involving heat and humidity, to assess the effectiveness of the 2020 remedy.

"The front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces may be adhered to the vehicle without primer. As a result, one or both pieces of trim may separate from the vehicle," NHTSA detailed in a letter dated Aug. 20.

Tesla is aware of approximately 170 reports related to this issue but has not received any reports of crashes or injuries. The company will test the adhesion of the roof trim and reattach it as necessary, at no cost to vehicle owners.

This recall contributes to Tesla's growing recall numbers, which reached nearly 2.6 million vehicles in the first half of 2024, second only to Ford Motor.
