Reddit is moving to strengthen user verification after a university-led experiment unleashed over 1,700 AI-powered, human-impersonating bots on the “Change My View” subreddit, alarming the platform’s global community.
The bots adopted various personas, including abuse survivors and controversial figures, in a study aimed at testing AI’s persuasive power.
Reddit swiftly condemned the “improper and highly unethical experiment” and filed a formal complaint with the university involved.
The incident highlighted the growing risk of generative AI bots manipulating online discourse and jeopardising Reddit’s reputation for authenticity concern made more urgent as Reddit now licenses its content to companies like OpenAI for AI model training.
In response, CEO Steve Huffman announced Reddit will begin working with third-party services to verify users’ humanity and, in some regions, their age.
This marks a major shift for a platform long valued for its minimal data requirements and strong culture of anonymity.

“To keep Reddit human and to meet evolving regulatory requirements, we are going to need a little more information,” Huffman wrote. “Specifically, we will need to know whether you are a human, and in some locations, if you are an adult. But we never want to know your name or who you are.”
While Reddit has not specified which verification services it will use, similar platforms rely on tools like Persona or Stripe Identity, which often require government-issued IDs.
Privacy advocates warn that such measures could undermine Reddit’s unique role as a haven for candid, anonymous discussion, especially around sensitive topics.
Reddit’s move mirrors broader trends in social media, as platforms face mounting regulatory pressure to verify users and protect minors.
As generative AI grows more sophisticated, Reddit’s challenge will be to preserve authenticity without sacrificing the anonymity that defines its community.
