Proof of Play CEO Predicts a Surge in Blockchain Demand in Gaming
- Amitt Mahajan anticipates a significant rise in blockchain use for gaming, expecting thousands of blockchains for different applications in the future.
- Pirate Nation, a crypto game by Proof of Play, switched from Polygon to Arbitrum Nova due to high gas fees.
- Later, the game created its own chain, Apex, to control costs predictably and plans to add more chains to accommodate growth.
Proof of Play CEO Amitt Mahajan expects a big increase in blockchain use for gaming. Mahajan, who created the popular Facebook game Farmville, believes that in the future, there will be thousands of blockchains for different applications.
“At peak, Farmville was at about 30 million daily active users. So in order to scale a game to that, we had like 64 databases,” Mahajan said in an interview with Decrypt.
“In this world, the blockchain is our database. We're essentially using the chain as our data store. So in order to scale to any number of actual usage, we need to split transactions across chains.”
Pirate Nation, a crypto game by Proof of Play, started on the Ethereum network Polygon but switched to Arbitrum Nova because of high gas fees on Polygon. Using shared networks was difficult since new projects on the same chain could raise gas fees for everyone. To fix this, Pirate Nation created its own chain called Apex.

The Proof of Play chief thinks this is the best solution for other apps too.
“As soon as you're an application with any level of scale, you need to be able to predictably control your gas costs,” said Mahajan.
Moreover, Mahajan said that they've hit the limit with Apex. To keep growing the game, they need to add new chains like B-chain, C-chain, and D-chain. He also mentioned that they'll be adding more chains in the future to handle more users.
