OpenAI has once again fallen victim to a Twitter hack, marking the fourth instance of such a breach. The company’s official Twitter account, OpenAI Newsroom, was compromised to promote a fake cryptocurrency named $OPENAI.
This account, which had 54,000 followers and primarily focused on company product updates, posted a now-deleted tweet that linked to a phishing website designed to look like OpenAI’s official homepage.
The fraudulent tweet falsely claimed that all OpenAI users were eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI's initial supply, suggesting that it would “bridge the gap” between blockchain technology and AI.
It further promised that claiming the tokens would grant buyers “access to all our future beta programs.” The hackers disabled comments on the tweet, likely to minimize suspicion and engagement.
Despite the repeated breaches, OpenAI has not announced any cryptocurrency or blockchain-related projects. This latest attack follows similar incidents involving high-profile OpenAI figures: CTO Mira Murati’s account was compromised in June 2023, Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki’s account in June 2024, and researcher Jason Wei’s account in September 2024. Each hack promoted the $OPENAI token scam.
Last week, Brazilian soccer star Neymar Jr., computer manufacturer Lenovo, and Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone also had their accounts hacked to promote a different memecoin, $HACKED.
