OpenAI Introduces 'Tasks' to Compete with Alexa and Siri

Generative AI leader OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new beta feature called Tasks for ChatGPT, marking its entry into the virtual assistant market. This move positions OpenAI against established players like Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa.

Tasks will allow ChatGPT users to schedule tasks for future execution, such as one-time reminders for concert ticket sales or recurring actions like daily weather updates and weekly news briefings. The feature enhances user convenience, making ChatGPT a robust personal assistant.

In addition to user-initiated tasks, ChatGPT may suggest tasks based on previous interactions. However, users retain control and can accept or decline these suggestions.

The release of ChatGPT in late 2022 catalyzed a surge of investment in AI technology, spurring competitors to innovate. Amazon, for instance, has revamped its decade-old Alexa platform by integrating generative AI capabilities. In December 2024, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed plans to launch the new version of Alexa, which can perform actions without user prompting, within the "coming months."
