Lionsgate Partners with Runway to Leverage AI for Film and TV Production

The deal gives Runway access to the studio's portfolio, including The Hunger Games. Lionsgate sees AI as a tool to enhance content creation while keeping production costs efficient.

  • Lionsgate has partnered with AI startup Runway to create a video generation model using its vast film and TV portfolio, including The Hunger Games and John Wick.
  • The collaboration aims to help filmmakers augment their work in both pre-production and post-production.

Lionsgate has entered a groundbreaking partnership with AI startup Runway, known for its generative models, to enhance video production using artificial intelligence.

The deal grants Runway access to Lionsgate's vast portfolio, including franchises like The Hunger Games and John Wick. Together, they aim to develop a customized video generation model designed to support filmmakers in their creative processes.

Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns sees the partnership as a significant step toward creating "capital-efficient content creation opportunities," emphasizing the technology’s potential to augment and enhance existing operations.

“Several of our filmmakers are already excited about its potential applications to their pre-production and post-production process,” Burns added.

Runway’s co-founder and CEO, Cristóbal Valenzuela, echoed the excitement, noting that the collaboration will offer filmmakers "new ways of bringing their stories to life."

While specific terms remain unclear, including how creative teams will be compensated if their work is used as training material, the deal could help reduce production costs, a factor likely to appeal to Lionsgate, known for its smaller budgets.

The move comes as Hollywood increasingly explores the potential of AI in filmmaking, despite concerns from creatives about job security. These concerns contributed to the SAG-AFTRA strike and have also led California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign two bills granting performers more control over their digital likenesses. Newsom may soon sign further legislation to hold AI developers accountable for potential harms caused by their creations.
