- Epic Games claims Apple is blocking its efforts to launch a games store on iOS in Europe.
- Epic argues that Apple's actions violate the DMA, while EU regulators have launched a new investigation into Apple's compliance with DMA standards.
Fortnite creator, Epic Games stated last week that Apple is obstructing its efforts to establish a games store on iPhones and iPads in Europe. According to Reuters, the video game publisher said Apple has twice rejected their documents to launch the Epic Games Store because some buttons and labels were very similar to those in the App Store.
“We are using the same 'Install' and 'In-app purchases' naming conventions that are used across popular app stores on multiple platforms, and are following standard conventions for buttons in iOS apps,” said Epic.
The gaming company, in fact, argued that Apple’s rejection is arbitrary and violates the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Epic and Apple have been in a legal dispute since 2020, with Epic accusing Apple of violating US antitrust laws by charging up to 30% commissions on in-app payments made on iOS devices.
Earlier this year, Apple suggested some changes to its App Store policies to align with certain instructions of the DMA that took effect in March.
However, last month, EU antitrust regulators said Apple's revised terms did not meet DMA standards and started a new investigation into its contract requirements for app developers and stores.
