The MoU, signed by Bharat Venishetti of Snapdeal and Amitabh Nag of Bhashini, aims to develop services and products that enhance language translation efforts to promote digital inclusion in India.

  • Snapdeal has signed an MoU with Bhashini, under MeitY, to enhance language translation efforts.
  • The partnership will leverage AI to create multilingual solutions, promoting digital inclusion and accessibility in online shopping, particularly benefiting users in Tier 3 cities and beyond.

Indian e-commerce company Snapdeal has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AI-powered language translation platform Digital India BHASHa INterface for India (Bhashini), a project established by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) within Digital India Corporation (DIC).

The MoU aims to develop services and products that enhance language translation efforts to promote digital inclusion in India. Bharat Venishetti from Snapdeal and Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini, signed the agreement.

This partnership will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to address India's diverse linguistic landscape, creating solutions in multiple languages to help people more easily understand and use digital services.

“This collaboration focuses on Snapdeal's commitment to advancing digital inclusivity in India. We look forward to combining Bhashini's deep expertise in language solutions with Snapdeal's robust e-commerce platform to empower individuals across diverse linguistic backgrounds. This initiative aligns seamlessly with our mission to enhance accessibility and affordability in online shopping, particularly in Tier 3 cities and beyond,” said Himanshu Chakrawarti, CEO of Snapdeal.

Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini, highlighted the importance of the partnership with Snapdeal, describing it as a significant milestone in promoting linguistic diversity and digital accessibility. “We are committed to leveraging technology for the greater good and enabling inclusive digital experiences for all,” he stated.

Nag also emphasized that through innovative use of AI and technology, Bhashini aims to break down barriers, enhance digital participation, and create a more connected and inclusive digital ecosystem for all Indians.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2022, Bhashini is actively working to overcome language barriers using AI. It strives to ensure that every citizen can easily access digital services in their native language.

Additionally, last year, Bhashini launched IndicTrans2, an open-source, transformer-based multilingual model that delivers high-quality translations across 22 Indian languages.
