- Meta has officially launched its Llama-3 powered chatbot, Meta AI, across India, expanding its AI capabilities in a key market with over 500 million Facebook and WhatsApp users.
- Meta AI is now accessible through Meta’s apps and the meta.ai website, offering functionalities like content creation, professional email drafting, and personalized recommendations for Reels on Instagram.
A few months ago, Facebook’s parent company, Meta was testing its large language model-powered chatbot, Meta AI, with users of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger in India and parts of Africa.
This effort was a part of the company's strategy to leverage its extensive user base to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. In response to significant AI developments from competitors like OpenAI, Meta hastened the rollout of its AI services, and India, a key market with over 500 million Facebook and WhatsApp users, emerged as a critical focus for these AI experiments.
Following several months of testing, Meta has now officially released its advanced AI chatbot, powered by Llama-3, named Meta AI, to all users across India.
“You can use Meta AI in feed, chats and more across our apps to get things done, create content, and deep dive on topics, without having to leave the app you’re using,” read Meta’s blog post. “When you’re trying to get things done at your computer, visit meta.ai. Need advice on a math problem, help making an email sound more professional, Meta AI can help here too.”
The parent company of Facebook launched its chatbot, Meta AI, over two months ago, initially making it available in countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, but not in India, possibly due to the Lok Sabha elections at the time.
Meta AI, which is similar to other chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, offers a range of functionalities such as recipe suggestions, workout planning, email drafting, and text summarization.
Users can access Meta AI through the search bar in Meta’s apps or via the meta.ai website. On Instagram, the chatbot can recommend Reels based on user queries, and on Facebook, it interacts with posts, like suggesting the best times and places to see the northern lights when users encounter related content.
