At the UN’s Summit of the Future in New York, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the launch of a $120 million Global AI Opportunity Fund. The fund will focus on expanding AI education and training globally, with a special emphasis on underserved communities and local languages. Pichai highlighted that partnerships with nonprofits and NGOs will play a key role in this initiative.

Reflecting on his upbringing in Chennai, India, Pichai shared how technology transformed his life.

“Growing up in Chennai, India, with my family, the arrival of each new technology improved our lives in meaningful ways,” he said.

Pichai also recalled how access to computers in the U.S. during graduate school motivated him to pursue a career in technology, aiming to make it more accessible to others.

The fund is part of Google’s broader AI commitment, which includes expanding the capabilities of Google Translate, now supporting 246 languages. Pichai noted that Google's long-term goal is to cover 1,000 of the world’s most spoken languages.

He also stressed the economic potential of AI, referencing studies that suggest AI could boost global labor productivity and GDP. Pichai underscored the importance of responsible AI development, reiterating Google’s adherence to its AI Principles and collaboration with international organizations like the UN and OECD.

“AI must be developed, deployed, and used responsibly, from the start,” Pichai emphasized, underlining the need for international cooperation in the responsible growth of AI.
