Issuer of the world's largest stablecoin, Tether, is launching a division dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI). Announced on Tuesday, this new unit will concentrate on creating open-source AI models and work in partnership with various companies to incorporate these models into solutions aimed at solving practical problems.

According to the company, initially, the plan is to lead the way in creating open-source, multimodal AI models, establishing new benchmarks for the industry, and promoting both innovation and wider access to AI technologies.

Additionally, the company will spearhead efforts to weave AI solutions into commercially viable products, using the technology to tackle tangible problems. Finally, by contributing to the wider community, Tether Data aims to further the progress of open AI and demonstrate its cutting-edge initiatives.

“As concerns grow over the monopolization of AI technologies by Big Tech, Tether Data, with this announcement, is stepping forward to champion transparency and privacy in AI model development,” reads Tether’s announcement.

Tether Data is also launching a worldwide hiring campaign to attract elite professionals for its rapidly expanding AI division. CEO Paolo Ardoino also took to X (formerly Twitter), looking to hire a head of AI R&D and AI engineers.

Moreover, in the announcement, Ardoino highlighted the company's investment in Northern Data Group as a component of its strategy towards embracing AI.

“Our investment in Northern Data Group, known for resilient and high-performance technologies, aligns perfectly with our vision. Today's announcement establishes a new division within Tether, redefining AI boundaries and democratizing privacy-preserving open AI technology while setting industry benchmarks for innovation, utility, and transparency,” said Ardoino.

In November 2023, Tether allocated 575 million euros (approximately $623 million) to Northern Data Group through debt financing. Northern Data Group operates a collection of data centers equipped with hardware such as GPUs, which companies utilize for AI development. This investment is among the few Tether has undertaken.
