Toronto-based Tech Spark AI, led by founder Tamar Huggins, announces a $1.4 million pre-seed funding round, with TD Bank as the lead investor. The funds will fuel the development of Spark Plug, an innovative, generative AI platform designed for a personalized and inclusive education experience.

Creating a Black-Owned alternative to mainstream AI platforms

Founded eight years ago, Tech Spark AI collaborates with educational institutions in the U.S. and Canada, focusing on a Black-owned alternative to mainstream AI search platforms like ChatGPT.

Spark Plug, developed in collaboration with Huggins' 13-year-old daughter, offers a distinct approach by translating classic literature into African American Vernacular English (AAVE), catering to Gen Z. The platform emphasizes inclusivity, aiming to be a leader in the field of generative AI with a focus on diverse voices.

Transformative learning with language translation and LearningDNA

Beyond language translation, Spark Plug introduces LearningDNA, an assessment tool to help educators understand students' learning preferences. The platform employs personalized approaches, such as presenting concepts with hip-hop melodies for students inclined toward auditory learning.

Overcoming funding challenges and championing inclusive AI

Despite initial challenges in fundraising, Spark Plug gained traction after an investment from TD Bank in late 2022. The platform's commitment to elevating perspectives from systematically excluded communities aligns with its mission to redefine technology's role in education, fostering a future where technology solutions are diverse and inclusive.
