Kepler Aerospace raises $8M seed round for ISR satellites

Kepler Aerospace has raised $8 Mn (around ₹75.8 Cr) in a seed funding round led by Blue Ashva Capital and co-led by Finvolve, India Accelerator, and other investors.

The Bengaluru-based startup’s first external fundraise since its inception in 2018 will support the development and deployment of its space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

Founded by Navneet Singh and Kiran V Sharma, Kepler builds infrastructure required across the lifecycle of a satellite mission.

Its work includes satellite avionics and subsystems such as onboard computers, power systems, radio frequency payloads, and communication and navigation modules; ground station and mission operations services; and space-based intelligence, under which it plans to operate satellites that collect and process surveillance data for defence and national security applications.

Kepler claims its mission operations platform serves nearly all Indian space companies and acts as the primary mission operator for several ISRO satellites. It also provides satellite communication, tracking, telemetry, command, and mission operations services through a network of more than 70 ground stations.

A key part of the funding will be used to develop and deploy Kepler’s first six autonomous swarming ISR satellites under two iDEX contracts secured for India’s defence space ecosystem. The programmes have also received around $4 Mn in grants under iDEX.

Kepler claims its proposed satellites will be capable of communicating with, assigning tasks to, and acting in coordination with one another in orbit without waiting for instructions from a ground station.

The startup said it aims to reduce the time taken to convert space-based data into actionable intelligence from months to minutes through these persistent ISR systems and its integrated mission infrastructure.

Over the next 12 to 24 months, Kepler will focus on deploying the satellites, expanding its mission operations and avionics-as-a-service businesses, and strengthening its engineering capabilities. The startup is also moving to a new facility and plans to add 40 employees to its existing team.

India’s commercial spacetech market is projected to reach $77 Bn by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 26%. The private spacetech ecosystem is expanding beyond launch vehicles and satellites into areas such as space-based intelligence, defence applications, satellite subsystems, ground infrastructure, and mission operations.
