Innovations in Rehabilitation with Articulate Labs

  • Articulate Labs, founded by Herbie Kirn and Josh Rainbowitz, developed KneeStim, a groundbreaking device designed to streamline the rehabilitation process for individuals with debilitating injuries, such as those resulting from road accidents.
  • KneeStim revolutionizes knee rehabilitation by enabling patients to perform therapy at home, seamlessly integrating it into their daily routines.
  • It is also the Winner of OrthoChallenge (2020).

Road accidents are a nightmare that we all dread. They happen more often than we'd like, and the consequences can be devastating. The injuries sustained in these accidents can be life-changing, leaving people with long-term problems they must deal with for the rest of their lives.

From spinal injuries to brain damage and even limb loss, the list of potential injuries is endless. It's a scary thought, but it's important to remember that we can all take steps to prevent these accidents from happening in the first place.

The treatment is difficult and time-consuming. But even after the treatment, they face prolonged issues. These issues are because of a lack of care post-treatment. Here comes Articulate Labs with a solution.

Background

Herbie Kirn and Josh Rainbowitz started Articulate Labs during his rehabilitation journey following a motorcycle accident.

Kirn lost his right leg in a motorcycle accident over fifteen years ago. He wore out the cartilage in his other knee when learning to walk again. He was told he was too young for a knee replacement and had to try different options. He tried braces, injections, and pills, but they all had terrible side effects.

He got better by doing exercises to make his leg muscles stronger. But he didn't have enough time to finish all his activities because he had to work and care for his family. While doing leg lifts with a machine that sends electrical signals to his muscles, he wondered why the machine couldn't do all his exercises.

This led to the development of his device, KneeStim.

They identified that when patients with arthritic knees don't follow their treatment plans or do their physical therapy after surgery, they can have bad results and cost more for their healthcare providers. This can cause their muscles to weaken, they can't move, and they might need more medicine.

The biggest problem with knee rehabilitation is going to physical therapy sessions. To solve this, KneeStim was made. It helps by letting people do therapy at home while doing normal things. This device turns everyday activities into exercises that make muscles stronger.

Doesn't that sound like a warm hug on a chilly day? It's like hitting two birds with one stone - your work becomes your physical therapy! And the best part? You don't have to squeeze another appointment into your already jam-packed schedule. How awesome is that?

Working of KneeStim

How does it work?

KneeStim collects information on how patients are doing after knee treatment. This helps doctors improve patient results and get paid for their work. The knee treatment market is worth $9 billion.

Being a boon to people with arthritic knees, KneeStim has received some awards and notable recognitions; in January 2021, it won the Astellas Rx+ Healthcare Innovation Challenge; in October 2022, it won the Innosparks Ventures AI Prize and many more.

Throughout five rounds, Articulate Labs has raised $715,000. On September 15, 2022, they received their most recent funding from a Seed round.

Three investors provide funding to Articulate Labs. The most recent investors include Techstars and MassChallenge.

In a world where road accidents can have disastrous effects, Articulate Labs and KneeStim are beacons of hope, providing people in need with a more enticing and accessible route to recovery and rehabilitation. Their story is a testament to how innovation can be used to solve problems in the real world and enhance the lives of those who have had catastrophic catastrophes.
