Indian Family Offices Increase Startup Investments

India’s family offices are increasing their startup investments, with family office-backed startup funding nearly doubling to $1.62 billion in 2024 from $876.7 million a year earlier. The shift is being driven partly by younger family members taking a larger role in investment decisions.
What Indian family offices do
Family offices allocate capital across areas including startups, impact investments and international ventures. India has more than 300 family offices managing assets exceeding $30 billion.
More than half of Indian family offices now involve millennials and Gen Z members in investment decisions. Around 30 per cent favour startup investments over traditional asset classes, with healthtech, fintech and artificial intelligence among the sectors receiving backing.

Why Indian family offices take a longer-term view
Family offices can take a longer-term view than conventional venture capital funds, according to industry experts cited in the report, because they can operate beyond fixed investment horizons and allow startups more time to scale and achieve profitability.
Wealth transfer and impact investing
The report links the increase to a broader generational transfer of wealth. The number of high-net-worth families with assets above $30 million is expected to rise from around 16,000 in 2025 to 26,000 by 2030, while intergenerational wealth transfers are projected to reach between $1.3 trillion and $1.5 trillion over the next decade.
Family office participation is also extending into impact investing. More than 900 high-net-worth families made impact investments between 2021 and 2024, according to the report.
