Indian Bank Dubai Office Plans: What the Expansion Means

Indian Bank has received board approval to open a representative office in Dubai as it expands its overseas operations. The Indian Bank Dubai office will require additional regulatory clearances before it can begin operations.

The plan sits alongside proposed expansion into Malaysia and Indonesia, the opening of around 100 domestic branches and hiring around 2,500 employees.

What the Indian Bank Dubai office will do

The Dubai location is planned initially as a representative office rather than a full-service branch. This would allow Indian Bank to establish a presence, understand business opportunities and serve the large Indian diaspora in West Asia.

Managing Director and CEO Binod Kumar said Indians account for about 33% of Dubai’s working population. The bank is now seeking the required regulatory approvals after its board approved the proposal.

The source does not specify when the office will open or which banking services it will eventually provide.

How Dubai fits Indian Bank’s overseas network

Indian Bank already operates a full-service international branch in Singapore and has branches in Colombo and Jaffna in Sri Lanka. It is also considering expansion into Malaysia and Indonesia.

The bank operates an IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City in Gandhinagar. According to Kumar, the GIFT City branch is generating good business, including participation in syndicated loans.

That existing network gives Indian Bank several overseas operating points, but the Dubai proposal is different in its initial structure. A representative office would mark the bank’s entry into the market while leaving the timing and scope of any future expansion open.

Domestic expansion will happen alongside the overseas plan

Indian Bank plans to open around 100 new branches this year, with a focus on central and western parts of India. The bank opened 100 branches last year and inaugurated 15 branches across the country on its foundation day on August 15.

As of June 30, 2026, Indian Bank had 6,003 domestic branches. The new branch plan therefore combines overseas expansion with a continued effort to increase coverage within India.

Why employee hiring is part of the plan

Indian Bank also plans to hire around 2,500 employees, including specialist officers. The hiring is intended to support growing business requirements and replace employees who are retiring.

The bank has strengthened its presence in eastern India and Uttar Pradesh following the amalgamation of Allahabad Bank in 2020. Its next domestic focus is central and western India.

The immediate next step for the overseas strategy is regulatory approval for the Indian Bank Dubai office. The source does not provide the approval timeline, the planned investment or whether the Dubai representative office will later become a full-service branch.
