HSBC India startup loans: over half of $1B deployed in a year

HSBC has used more than half of the $1 billion it committed to lend to startups in India within a year of starting operations on its innovation banking platform. David Sabow, the bank's global head of innovation banking, said so in an interview with the Economic Times.

HSBC announced the India launch of HSBC Innovation Banking on 9 October 2025. Sabow said the bank has exceeded its targets on loans, deposits and client acquisition, and plans to deepen its existing franchise in the country. He expects to add at least 500 clients in India over the next year.

Sabow said the lending is spread mostly across consumer tech, B2B, B2C and commerce companies, with a little on enterprise software, and that 70-80% would be B2B, B2C, consumer and commerce platforms.

The bank has not yet decided to raise the limit, but Sabow said it is unlikely to stop at $1 billion and could increase its capital allocation at some point. He described India and Asia as big strategic areas of focus within HSBC. The bank has also noted strong demand from the sector.

"We have made good progress, deploying more than half of the $1 billion committed," Sabow said.
