The move: Fujifilm is investing in Dholera

Fujifilm said on Thursday that it is investing about Rs 800 crore to establish a semiconductor materials plant in phases in the Dholera Special Investment Region in Gujarat. It also signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with Tata Electronics to accelerate the development of India’s semiconductor materials ecosystem around the latter’s upcoming fab in Dholera.

The first stage of the project should be completed by 2028, according to Tetsuya Iwasaki, general manager of Fujifilm’s electronic materials business division. Fujifilm wants to build up its production and business capabilities in India from scratch.

What Fujifilm does in semiconductor materials

Fujifilm is exploring technology transfer opportunities with Indian companies in the semiconductor space, specifically quality control capabilities. It has some products certified by Tata Electronics for the first phase.

A later phase would bring Fujifilm’s strength in CMP slurries to India. These are liquid mixtures containing nano-sized abrasive particles and reactive chemicals used to flatten and polish semiconductor wafers during chip manufacturing. The company is also looking into developing an R&D centre to service projects in India and provide skills to local talent.

Technology transfer and R&D

Fujifilm is also looking at providing technology and manufacturing process knowledge to Indian chemical manufacturers, with a focus on the purity and quality-control standards required in semiconductor manufacturing.

Fujifilm currently has around 10 employees in India, and that number could go up to 70 in the next five years.

“We consider India not just as a market to get some profit to produce materials but want to build up the production and business capabilities here from scratch,” Iwasaki said.
