Crypto and Web3 industry leaders today launched the Decentralized AI Society (DAIS), an umbrella organization helping builders of decentralized learning models, data providers, hardware suppliers, and advocates of safe and beneficial AI to collectively ensure that artificial intelligence serves humanity’s broad interests rather than a select few tech giants.
DAIS – which launched with Ceti, Filecoin Foundation, Bloq, Hypercycle, Morpheus, Hemi, Odyssey and Lumerin as founding members – was created to address the urgent need for a decentralized model of development, ownership and governance that can save the AI economy from the mistakes of the post-millennial Web2 economy. If AI is to serve humanity, then control over data, learning models, inference and computing resources must be decentralized in ways the Web currently is not. The founders of DAIS recognize that to overcome the economies of scale enjoyed by the giant data-aggregating platforms that dominate the internet, the communities and companies developing this decentralized alternative must work together, sharing information, resources and political clout.
DAIS is chaired by veteran journalist and educator Michael Casey, formerly CoinDesk’s Chief Content Officer and chair of Consensus. He is the author of six acclaimed books about technology and society, including The Age of Cryptocurrency with Paul Vigna and, with Frank McCourt earlier this year, Our Biggest Fight: Reclaiming Liberty, Humanity and Dignity in the Digital Age. To operationalize DAIS, Casey joined forces with James Haft, serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Crypto Mondays & DLTx, and Alexa Karp, former growth and marketing executive in Lumerin & Metaplex.
DAIS is also announcing an advisory board. Filecoin Foundation will have a seat on that board, alongside Matthew Roszak, co-founder of Hemi, Bloq and Tally Capital, and Toufi Saliba, Global Chair of the IEEE ipAIs (International Protocols For AI Security), co-author of Toda/IP and CEO at HyperCycle.
DAIS is being launched at a moment of both opportunity and urgency. As large-language models and generative AI accelerate the development of machine learning and computational capacity, every aspect of our lives is poised to be altered. From medical breakthroughs and sustainable food production to energy efficiency, finance and advanced climate science, AI could usher in a new era of innovation and productivity. Yet, at the same time, if the current concentration of internet power is extended into the AI era, the privacy abuses, societal divides and economic imbalances that marked the Web2 period will go into overdrive.
The founders of DAIS strongly believe that if AI is to be developed and deployed in a safe and beneficial manner it must be built on the principles of self-sovereign data, open-source code, privacy, and decentralized infrastructure that are the ethos of crypto and blockchain. The goal is to build an internet of AI that benefits everyone, not just the few.
Throughout history, open and distributed models have ultimately outpaced closed systems in driving innovation and progress, due to the greater access to information and ideas unlocked by this approach. But regulatory barriers, scalability limits, usability issues and coordination challenges tend to curtail the speed with which decentralized systems can achieve that happy outcome. In the case of decentralized AI (DeAI), time is not on our side.
With that in mind, DAIS represents a call to action for a diverse coalition of stakeholders – leading crypto protocols, DeAI pioneers, and advocates of decentralization – to address and rapidly overcome these challenges. DAIS will function as an information clearinghouse and collective action body, facilitating coordination among DeAI developers while allowing them to retain their competitive edge. It’s built on the idea that by sharing information, seeking out common solutions and encouraging interoperability, the industry can more effectively compete with the centralized players and ensure the benefits of AI are widely distributed.
The Society will also focus on several critical areas:
- Engineering: DAIS will sponsor research to tackle the challenges of decentralized machine learning and data processing, aiming to make these technologies as efficient and scalable as their centralized counterparts.
- Capital for Entrepreneurship: Recognizing the massive funding required for AI advancements, DAIS will explore innovative financing models, including tokenized funding and traditional venture capital, to support DeAI startups.
- Policy: DAIS will work with policymakers to craft fair regulations that support the DeAI sector and prevent regulatory capture by entrenched tech giants.
- Outreach and Promotion: The Society will bridge the gap between the crypto world and mainstream institutions, promoting the benefits of decentralized AI and encouraging broader adoption.
The initial activities of DAIS will include hosting high-profile events, forming working committees, producing valuable research reports, and creating a shared data lake for industry-wide insights. Additionally, DAIS plans to establish an accelerator program for startups, sponsor innovation prizes, and provide essential professional services to its members.
The Team’s vision for DAIS is rooted in a commitment to ethical and inclusive AI development. By bringing together diverse stakeholders and fostering collaboration, DAIS aims to steer the AI revolution in a direction that truly benefits humanity. The formation of DAIS is a proactive step towards a future where AI serves the common good.
About DAIS
The Decentralized AI Society (DAIS) brings together leading players in the decentralized AI ecosystem. It supports the development and adoption of AI products founded on self-sovereign data and identity, digital assets, open-source code, privacy-preserving models, edge computation and security, and decentralized infrastructure. DAIS’s mission is to share information, organizational heft, and resources to ensure the internet of AI is built by and for the benefit of human beings rather than a few giant data-hogging social media companies.
