Curvenote Catalyzing Scientific Discovery

Curvenote is empowering scientists with innovative tools to share research effectively and accelerate discoveries.

  • Founded in 2019 by Rowan Cockett and Steve Purves, offers writing and publishing tools for scientists.
  • It aims to revolutionize scientific publishing for accessibility and collaboration.
  • Online editor supports Markdown, Latex-based math, and integration with Jupyter Notebooks for reproducible research.

Imagine you're a scientist, eagerly conducting an experiment to uncover a groundbreaking discovery. You meticulously plan each step, gather your materials, and embark on your journey of exploration. But what if, at the end of your experiment, you couldn't share your results with the world?

What if your findings were trapped in a static, uneditable document, inaccessible to your peers and the wider scientific community? This is the challenge that Curvenote aims to solve.

Founded in 2019 by Rowan Cockett and Steve Purves, Curvenote is like the lab assistant you've always dreamed of. It provides a platform for writing and publishing tools tailored specifically for scientists and engineers.

Just as a good lab assistant helps you conduct experiments efficiently, Curvenote helps you communicate your research effectively.

The Experiment Begins

Rowan Cockett, Curvenote's CEO, had already tasted success with his visualization startup when he decided to tackle the challenge of scientific communication. His experience highlighted the frustrating gap between conducting research and sharing it with the world.

This realization led him to team up with Steve Purves, Curvenote's CTO, a seasoned entrepreneur with a background in machine learning and data science. Together, they set out to revolutionize scientific publishing, starting with the way research is communicated.

Why Curvenote matters?

Curvenote believes that,

"Science deserves better than being locked away in static PDFs." - Curvenote Website

They advocate for boldness and empathy in scientific publishing, pushing the boundaries to accelerate discovery. Their platform is designed to be open and accessible, making science findable and usable for everyone.

By empowering collaboration and community, it aims to elevate both the collective and the individual, creating a more efficient and effective scientific ecosystem.

Unique features and functionality

Curvenote's platform offers a range of features designed to make scientific writing and publishing easier and more interactive. Their online editor supports Markdown Acceleration, Latex-based math and equations, citations, tables, figures, and interactive components.

This means researchers can write anything from scientific papers to complete Ph.D. theses, all while collaborating with others in real-time. Integration with Jupyter Notebooks enables reproducible figures and interactive outputs, bridging the gap between data science and research communication.

In March 2021, Curvenote raised $1,000,000 in seed funding from Verissimo Ventures and Y Combinator. This investment helped them expand their platform and reach more scientists and engineers around the world.

The future of scientific discovery

Curvenote is more than just a platform; it's a movement toward a future where scientific ideas are freely shared, easily accessible, and collaboratively developed.

Just as a well-conducted experiment yields meaningful results, Curvenote aims to facilitate meaningful discoveries by providing scientists and engineers with the tools they need to communicate effectively. I mean, their actions do justice to their name, doesn't it?
