CCPA spam guidelines: What businesses need to verify

What changed

The Central Consumer Protection Authority has proposed guidelines to regulate unsolicited commercial communications across telecom networks, messaging apps and social media platforms. The proposal would require explicit consent for specific brands and products, opt-out mechanisms, and no fresh consent requests for 45, 60 or 90 days after a consumer opts out.

The draft would also require businesses to appoint grievance officers, acknowledge complaints within 24 hours and resolve them within seven days.

Who it affects

The proposal is relevant to businesses using telecom networks, messaging apps or social media platforms for customer outreach. The Federation of Indian Micro & Small & Medium Enterprises has warned that consent, record-keeping and follow-up requirements could impose disproportionate compliance costs on smaller businesses.
