Bioscan Research, a medtech startup building a non-invasive device to detect traumatic brain injuries, has raised $1 million in a seed round led by Unicorn India Ventures.

The Ahmedabad-based company, founded in 2017 by Anupam Lavania and Shilpa Malik, sits at the intersection of optics, electronics, mechanics, and software. Its flagship product, CEREBO, is a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device that uses machine learning to detect intracranial haemorrhage — even in patients showing no visible symptoms. The objective: catch mild traumatic brain injuries that standard tools miss, before they escalate.

Globally, more than 50 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury each year, and an estimated 50–90% of mild cases go unidentified. For health systems and insurers in the India–Gulf corridor, a portable, pre-symptomatic diagnostic could reduce late-stage intervention costs and expand triage capacity in settings that lack advanced imaging.

The capital will be deployed toward market expansion, securing additional regulatory approvals, product upgrades, and building new IP. Over the next twelve months, the startup is targeting 3x growth and entry into international markets.
