Azista Space’s Move From Isro Contractor to Global Products

Azista Space moved from building hardware to Isro’s drawings as a contractor to developing its own products for the global market. About three years after its aerospace business emerged, the company made that call.

Its policy environment changed in 2020, when reforms allowed private companies to design, build, own and operate rockets, satellites, ground systems and launch infrastructure, subject to authorisation. The policy change became a catalyst for Azista Space.

What Azista Space does

Azista Industries began in Hyderabad in 2014 with organic food products and pharmaceuticals. Its aerospace business emerged in 2016 around space and composites, and it gained its first exposure to space technology in 2017 as an Isro subcontractor.

Azista Space developed an 80kg Earth-observation satellite, ABA First Runner, in collaboration with Berlin Space Technologies. It was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 in 2023.

The supply-chain gap

Azista Space’s experience with Isro taught it the quality systems, documentation discipline and process rigour that space demands. Its 80kg Earth-observation satellite, ABA First Runner, was made with Berlin Space Technologies.

Roughly 47% of Azista Space’s bill of materials by value still comes from outside India. Specialised components such as aerospace-grade valves, cryogenic components, radiation-hardened electronics, optical glass and coatings remain supply-chain gaps.

The execution test

Space hardware must withstand vacuum, thermal cycling, radiation and launch vibration, and cannot be repaired after launch.

“We had to build quality systems and traceability where every component, process and test is documented and auditable end to end,” says Azista Space Managing Director Srinivas Reddy.
