Amazon Pay agentic UPI payments: what changed in 2026

Amazon Pay rolled out agentic UPI payments during the Global Fintech Fest 2026, allowing AI agents to book flight tickets and make payments on users’ behalf. The launch was made through Smart wallet, in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and online travel firm ixigo.
The company is aiming for a wider rollout to other merchants in the coming days.
What Amazon Pay’s agentic UPI payments do

It also offers Buy Now Pay Later services through Amazon Pay Later, in partnership with Axio and ICICI Bank, and distributes vehicle and health insurance with insurers including ACKO, HDFC ERGO, United India and ICICI Bank.

Amazon Pay’s agentic payment offerings
Amazon Pay’s revenue potential will depend on how much access it gets to the websites and services people use online, especially for shopping. It remains unclear whether AI agents from other companies will be allowed to make agentic UPI payments on users’ behalf.
The launch comes as Amazon Pay loses UPI ground
Amazon Pay has lost ground to newer UPI players over the last two years. In August 2024, it processed 70.72 million transactions, ahead of WhatsApp at 45.43 million and super.money at 11.63 million.
By August 2026, super.money processed 421.87 million UPI transactions and WhatsApp recorded 183.69 million, while Amazon Pay processed 95.93 million. In FY26, its net loss widened 33% year-on-year to Rs 1,148.5 crore, even as revenue from operations rose 18% to Rs 2,484.4 crore.
